It might sound controversial but more often than not negativity brings balance and health especially in this era where we are told to smile so that the world can smile back at us. In every corner we turn, there is a message that tells us to “keep smiling,” or “think positive,” and so forth as if such gestures are easy and are the right things to do.

However, being a psychologist, and a long time student of positive psychology, there is need to say that this kind of messages can be dangerous as they aim to drive human beings away from a very critical and natural psychological resource— Negativity.

I am not trying to depict that having negative emotions are better than staying positive, but there are times when allowing yourself drift into negativity can help accomplish better results in your relationship, work, or even your entire life. The catch is to maintain the right balance between negative and positive emotions. Undoubtedly, positive emotions bring about a more pleasurable feeling, but that does not mean we should always strive to maintain a positive state of mind.

Negative emotions are natural. Feeling sad, anxious, afraid, and angry is a natural consequence of day-to-day events, and it is perfectly fine and acceptable to feel that way.

Negative emotions make us aware of dangers, and they alert us when things are not working for us.

Negativity is a great motivator. People change when they feel bad about something, and they cannot bear the unhappiness any longer.
